food for thought: avoid avoidance.

By Erica | July 12, 2010

“The best way to waste your life … is by taking notes. The easiest way to avoid living is to just watch. Look for the details. Report. Don’t participate. – Chuck Palahniuk

True words from one of my favorite authors.

Sometimes I do miss more things by taking notes. And then I become dependent on the notes and lose them.

Abby – It’s so true. Pretty sad to hear as a writer, but I can think of plenty of times when I hung back & sort of “analyzed” the situation rather than being a part of it. Gotta work on that! Welcome to the site, BTW :)

Chuck Palahniuk knows where it’s at. What a great quote from an awesome writer. He also has some great writing tips that I found years ago on his blog if you want to check them out. He’s a clever guy. (http://chuckpalahniuk.net/features/essays/chuck-palahniuk)

I spend way too much time standing back and observing when I could be a part of it all! Definitely gotta stop that.

@Corrine – Thanks, babe! All credit goes to Mr. Palahniuk, though. :)

@Brittany – So glad you came to visit, girl. Thank you so unbelievably much for those writing tips! That is awesome, really. And yes–I believe all of us writers/creative types have quite an issue with observing/thinking too much and acting far too little. But they say the first step to solving a problem is admitting it, so I guess we’re halfway there. :)
